By 1971, the company was limited to a single store in Seattle, in the historic Pike Place Market. In that small shop, Starbucks® served some of the best coffee in the world, freshly roasted from whole beans. The name Starbucks®, taken from the novel Moby Dick, evokes the legend on the high seas and maritime tradition of the first coffee merchants.

Since its inception, Starbucks Coffee Company has been committed to coffee growers to obtain the highest quality coffee ethically and responsibly.
