Andorinhas
About the art.
This project arises from the union between the recovery of materials and the deep inspiration drawn from nature and its rhythms of freedom. Created by Miguel Martins, these two large-scale sculptures represent swallows in mid-flight – universal symbols of lightness, preservation, and hope.
The choice of swallows is no coincidence. These migratory birds, as well as marking the cycle of the seasons, carry a strong meaning linked to sustainability and respect for nature, values that Forum Algarve intends to reinforce with this installation.
Measuring around 5×7 meters and 6×8 meters, the pieces were built using assemblage techniques and artisanal methods. Made from reused wood and recovered metals, the pieces take shape through an artisanal process involving cutting, gluing, and assembling diverse materials, preserving the textures and histories of each element. The balance between tradition and innovation, a hallmark of Miguel’s work, is reflected in the meticulous construction of these sculptures, capturing both the swallows’ graceful flight and the symbolic power of their journeys.
About the artist.
Miguel Martins develops his artistic practice by exploring old and apparently disposable materials, transforming them into sculptures and assemblages that tell stories of memory and reinvention. Wood, iron, and tiles are among the elements he rescues, honoring their imperfections and breathing new life into them.
A multifaceted visual artist, Miguel is driven by curiosity and the incessant search for new visual languages. Self-taught by essence, at Estúdio Onze he develops pieces that reinterpret Portuguese heritage, always through experimental and intuitive processes.
